JAMES POOK

About me

I am South African born and bred and a member of the ginger family. I came over to the sunny country 13 years ago as the life of an accountant wasn't for me! Fitness has always been a big part of my life having played sports for most of my life and competing at national level in a few. My passion for helping others tied so well into coaching (I hope) that I decided to level the corporate world and move into a full time coaching!

Why am I a coach?

Why do I coach, first and foremost this is the best way I can help someone, by using what I am truly passionate about to help them achieve their goals. It is also a way that I can constantly develop and build on my knowledge. Everyday is a different challenge but one that I love! My advice to anyone starting their fitness journey would be to set goals, short, medium and long term. Start small and you can always go back and readjust the goal post but goals are what will get you through on those cold winter mornings when you don’t want to get out of bed and they will get you through when your lungs are burning and that next rep seems impossible.

My advice if you are new to CrossFit

Set yourself a couple of goals and celebrate the small wins! Things aren't going to magically happen over night so give it time, trust in your coaches and most importantly have fun!

SARAH MOLLOY

About me

My name is Sarah Molloy and I’m a Level 1 CrossFit Coach and Personal Trainer. I grew up in Kent and studied in London before before moving to the Middle East. It is here that I discovered my love for fitness; training outdoors, swimming and running in the desert. When I return to London I found CrossFit and fell in love with the variety and excitement that this type of training offered.

Why am I a coach?

I became a coach for a few reasons, the first being that Crossfit training has always been a great support to me personally both physically and mentally and I wanted to enable others to feel that too. As a coach I hope to help people to become more confident in their own skin, to introduce them to a method of fitness which is sustainable, enjoyable and which will keep them fit for life.

My advice if you are new to CrossFit

For anyone starting their fitness journey right now, my advice would be to not worry about your current fitness level, it doesn’t matter, we all have to start somewhere. Walking into a Crossfit gym for the first time can be intimidating but choose a gym which suits you, where you want to be every day and that is how you’ll learn, grow and improve.

So, enjoy the process, don’t worry about what you cannot do, just concentrate on all the small improvements you make each week – these are the things which will lead to the bigger stuff later!

My favourites

If you’ve ever been in one of my classes you will know that I love my music and I’m usually blasting 80’s bangers or aggressive hiphop! It would be hard to name my favourite artist but I love to train to Cypress Hill, NWA, Rage Against the Machine and many more but equally like to chill out to Fleetwood Mac, Honne, Aloe Blacc and Tracy Chapman.

I don’t watch much TV (I don’t actually own one) but I do occasionally watch Netflix and recently watched The Tiger King…it was off the scale crazy viewing! I do have some favourite movies though, I love classic adventure movies such as Indiana Jones – I always wanted to be Marion Ravenwood (mainly because she was bad ass and won arm wrestles against some massive dudes!).

I’m also a big fan of Podcasts especially when out on long walks, I often listen to Joe Rogan for his humour and debates.I have a passion for reading and writing, I mainly write poetry but have also written pieces on behavioural science and health & fitness.

My top reads of late have been  ‘A Man is no Woman’ by Etaf Rum and ’Conscious Coaching’ by Brett Bartholomew and my classic all time favourites are ’To Kill a Mockingbird’ and ‘I Know why the Cage Bird Sings’.

Most people already know this but I love me some peanut butter…on anything, on it’s own, and especially with my second favourite food. Chicken!

My guilty pleasure is homemade flapjacks eaten straight out the oven, dipped in peanut butter and standing in a particular corner of my kitchen whilst scrolling Instagram stories!

When thinking about heroes I have to mention that when I was growing up (as an 80’s /90’s kid), I wanted to be one of the Gladiators from the TV show. I loved Jet, I wanted to be as strong as her so maybe that’s where the want to train originally came from.

I’ve always been in awe of women such as Maya Angelou who overcame adversity to help others as a rival rights activist and talented writer & singer.

I have been going to boxing matches with my family since I was younger and still really enjoy watching fights especially live at the York Hall in Bethnal Green where we always used to go.

I’ve also always enjoy watching the athletics, I love to see so many talented athletes in one arena and my favourite event is the 100m sprint. There are actually not many things I’m scared of but I run around like a maniac if a wasp approaches me!

RORY

About me

Originally from Dorset, I moved to London during early 2019. Coming from an elite sport background as a teenager and then some time in the military as a young adult, it’s fair to say fitness has always played a big part in my life.

With more endurance training experience (due to playing team sports and the military days), I found CrossFit in early 2016 and haven’t looked back. The camaraderie in the CrossFit community is the closest to that of the military I have come across since leaving, and to me this is CrossFit’s greatest strength.

Professionally I have been working as a coach within strength and conditioning and CrossFit for 7 years, including time with British Rowing and multiple CrossFit affiliates up and down the country.

Why am I a coach?

To be able to do what I love every day is a privilege. Despite the early mornings and late finishes, there isn’t anything I’d rather be doing (except maybe having more time to train!). They say that the meaning of life is to find your gift, and that the purpose of life is to share that gift with others – coaching people of all types to get fit and strong is my gift, whether they be an elite level athlete or someone just wanting to be healthy.

My advice if you are new to CrossFit

Ease yourself into it. CrossFit can be highly addictive and there is a strong chance you will be wanting to get to the box every day to train hard. That is great, but especially if you don’t have a training background, it is important to progressively build up your training volume. My other top tip would be to spend extra time working on skills and mobility – it is easy to forget that the movements in CrossFit are also skills and require technical practice under low intensity, before increasing the speed and load under which they are performed. Technical proficiency is so important but often neglected.

My favourites

Favourite film – Casino Royale.
Favourite music genre – disco i.e. Glitterbox.
Favourite TV show – Friends.Favourite podcast – The Strength Coach Podcast or Modern Wisdom.
Favourite book – Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl.

What are you scared of – snakes.
